Residents called to active military service
eligible for extension on property taxes
Local residents who have been deployed into active military service are eligible for an extension on their property taxes. Those interested in applying for the extension can download an application form from the Monroe County web site at www.monroecounty.gov.
All servicemen and women who have been deployed to active military duty by presidential executive order or hazardous duty are eligible for the extension, which runs until 90 days after the end of the individual's deployment. No interest payments or penalties will accrue during the extension period and spouses and other individuals affected by the deployment may also be eligible.
The extension was approved by the Monroe County Legislature and signed into law by Brooks in December last year. Monroe County is participating in the extension under the provisions of the Patriot Plan, which was signed into law by Governor Pataki in 2003. This law authorizes counties to provide this extension to deployed military personnel on a county-by-county basis.
Questions about the extension program can be directed to the Monroe County Veteran's Service Agency at 274-6040 or by e-mail at mcveterans@monroecounty.gov.
