Spencerport art teachers published in national magazine
Two Spencerport School District art teachers have had their classroom lessons published in articles in the national "School Arts" magazine.
Julie Bachman, an art teacher at Canal View Elementary School, had an article published in the December 2004 issue. The article described how third-grade students used the inspiration of the French artist Matisse, who featured bright colors and strong patterns, to create drawings of rooms. The student drawings included furniture, plants and other room objects with at least one pattern on the furniture, wall or floor. The article featured several of the students' drawings.
Stephanie Hodge's article on clay figures in the September issue showed how the work of ceramic artist Deborah Fleck-Stabley inspired students to design three-dimensional clay figures. The article gave a step-by-step outline of the artistic behaviors that were explored, steps in the production of the figures and criteria to assess student learning. Hodge is an art teacher at Spencerport High School.
