Consumers urged to "get smart" about insurance

The New York state Insurance Department is launching a public awareness effort urging New Yorkers to "Get Smart About Insurance," according to Assemblyman Bill Reilich (R,C,I-Greece).

Consumers who want an objective source of information on insurance companies and types of coverage offered can contact the state Insurance Department for assistance. Reilich said that a national study has shown that many Americans do not fully understand the details of their insurance policies.

The agency advises consumers to undergo an annual insurance review with their agents to examine each policy and detect areas of too much or too little coverage. A review also should be undertaken whenever there is a major change in circumstances, such as the purchase of a new home, or car, or the birth or adoption of a child.

Reilich said the department offers free guides outlining New York's insurance laws and regulations, and provides information that includes premium comparison reports, policy coverage options and insurer contacts.
