Saints fall in semi-final

Top-seeded Churchville-Chili lost to fourth-seeded Fairport 60-47 in the Class AAA Section Five girl's basketball tournament played at Roberts Wesleyan College.

The Saints ran out to an 11-4 lead after the first quarter, having little trouble breaking the Red Raiders press for easy baskets. Senior Katie Sullivan, who has committed to play Division I basketball for Southern Wesleyan in South Carolina next season, scored eight of her thirteen first half points in the second quarter as the Saints led by three.

Early in the third quarter, the teams exchanged the lead before the Red Raiders scored the final four baskets to lead by six. The first two baskets of the final quarter also went to Fairport to build the lead to nine points and they never looked back in breaking the Saints 14-game winning streak.

"We had a good first half with a good transition game, but the tempo of the game changed in the second half," said head coach Ryan Raftery. "When we played them twice in the regular season, we went to the foul line 68 times combined. Today, there were seven total fouls before the last four minutes of the game. I just think it was called differently."

Sullivan led with 17 points and five steals for Churchville-Chili while J.J. Begley also was in double figures with 11 points to go with six rebounds. Chatanie Williams hauled down 15 rebounds, in spite of leaving the game briefly with an injury, along with eight points and four steals. Colleen Montgomery added five points and five rebounds while Morgan Skiff scored four points with five rebounds.

Seniors Sullivan, Begley, Emilie Rowe and Montogomery suited up for their final high school game.
