Spencerport teams and cheerleaders
donate to American Cancer Society

Spencerport Central Schools, along with sponsors of Roberts Wesleyan College, Wendy's Restaurants of Rochester and the American Cancer Society, hosted its 8th annual Coaches vs. Cancer Boys Basketball Tournament on December 3 and 4, 2004 at Spencerport High School and the 14th Annual Coach Chow Classic on December 28 and 29, 2004 at Roberts Wesleyan College.

This year, the boys CVC tournament featured local teams Brighton, Penfield and Brockport along with host Spencerport, and the girls Coach Chow Classic participants were westside rivals Brockport, Churchville-Chili, Gates Chili and host Spencerport.

All proceeds from the tournaments are directed to the American Cancer Society in the name of Coaches vs. Cancer and Coach Don Wierzchowski. Coaches vs. Cancer is affiliated with the National Association of Basketball Coaches and was formed to honor the late Jim Valvano, a college basketball coach and ESPN announcer who passed away from cancer. Coach Don Wierzchowski was a long-time and successful girls' basketball coach who died from pancreatic cancer in May 2002.

A donation of $4,290 was given to the American Cancer Society from this year's tournaments, making an eight-year total of over $37,000.
