Women's Art Invitational Exhibit at
Genesee Center for the Arts through April 15

The Lobby Gallery of the Stuart Steiner Theatre at Genesee Center for the Arts has on display a Women's Invitational Art Exhibit. Women from the United States, Canada and Romania are displaying their artwork through April 15. A traveling exhibit from the National Women's Hall of Fame in Seneca Falls, is also on display in the Gallery. A closing Artists' Reception is scheduled for Friday, April 8 from 4 to 6 p.m.

Ten contemporary artists are represented in this show with a total of 20 pieces on display. Various styles including fine and commercial art, medical illustration and computer graphic arts are rendered through drawing, painting and mixed media. Alan Gordon, art instructor at Genesee Community College, developed and curated the exhibit to recognize and celebrate Women's History Month during the month of March.

Interspersed throughout the gallery space are also ten large display panels revealing the life stories and contributions of ten American women. Susan B. Anthony, Amelia Earhart, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Betty Friedan, Helen Keller, Antonia Novello, Georgia O'Keeffe, Rosa Parks, Maria Tallchief and Sojourner Truth are revealed with imagery and story boards on loan from the National Women's Hall of Fame.

"I developed this show because it gives a stage to artists who deserve to be noticed and showcases a point of view that is often overlooked," Gordon said. "The interspersed imagery and story boards of notable American women ties the exhibit together by illustrating the important contributions women have made to make our culture and society."

The exhibit was made possible, in part, with funds from the Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York Council on the Arts, administered by Genesee-Orleans Art Council. The ten artists whose work is on display are: Janis Acampor, NY; Rachael Altbach, Rochester; Sarah Atlee, AZ; Amy Bonner, Rochester; Amy Bucur Ioana, Romania; Christine Gordon, Rochester; Amy Greenan, Buffalo; Tincu Pojoga, Romania; Dana Ranke, Canada; and Avery Stanert, MA.

The exhibit was hung by students from Genesee's Museum Practice class, taught by adjunct art instructor Susan Forster. The class focuses primarily on how to professionally prepare work for exhibition, how to design a showcase, and some of the important details of operating a successful gallery space.

The Celebration of Women's History Month at Genesee Community College's Center for the Arts also includes a lecture about notable women from upstate New York on March 17, given by Billie Luisi-Potts, executive director at the Hall of Fame, and Kimberly Williams, assisted Learning Lab coordinator at Genesee. This lecture will be given at a "Leading Ladies Luncheon" with young women from Batavia High School specifically invited to attend.
