Spencerport village voters turn out in record numbers
Spencerport mayor keeps seat
Incumbent Ted Walker beat challenger Greece Police Chief Merritt Rahn for the mayoral seat in the Village of Spencerport at the polls March 15. Walker garnered 435 votes, Rahn 287. Incumbent Village Board Trustee Theodore Rauber received 457 votes and John Marello received 328. Both were elected to four year terms.
Village Clerk Pam Gilbert said 705 people voted on the machines and there were 28 absentee/emergency ballots cast. Two years ago, she said 43 people voted in the village election and 143 voted four years ago.
"This is the first time in quite a few years that we've had a contested race," she said of the high numbers.
Walker said he was pleased with the "huge" voter turnout.
"I commend the residents for understanding the importance of the election and their desire to participate in the process," he said.
Now that the election and campaigning are over, Walker said he will concentrate his efforts on the betterment of the village, which he said, has always been his goal.
"The attitude and agenda I presented during the past four years and during the campaign will be my path for the future," he said.
Walker said he wants to find a way to maintain the public participation that was evidenced during the election.
"Our budget proposal will be in a few weeks with the budget hearing on April 7 and that would be a great opportunity to have dialog about our plans for the village and what the residents would like to see happen," he said.
