Newsmakers for the week of

Dr. William F. Stier, Jr., a professor within the physical education and sport department at SUNY Brockport, recently published a book titled: "Athletic Administration - Successful Decision Making, Risk Taking and Problem Solving."

Stier has written 17 books and also had an article published in the spring issue of the national journal, Strategies. This brings to 306 the number of articles Stier has written that have appeared in 85 different international, national, regional and state professional journals.

Stier directs the undergraduate sport management program at SUNY Brockport, where he also has responsibility for the graduate program in athletic administration and the sport coaching program.


Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society at Monroe Community College has inducted the following students from this area:

Alison M. Kincaid of Spencerport was named to the dean's list at Binghamton University for the fall semester.


Jamie Miller of Hilton has received a National Scholarship Award to attend the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City. Admission to AMDA is competitive and students throughout the US, Canada and 18 foreign countries auditioned for admission this year.

Miller will perform as Mary in Hilton's musical "The Secret Garden," on April 8, 9 and 10. She will also be performing as Peggy in Blackfriar theaters production of "Godspell" which opens April 23.


Colleen O'Laughlin, a 1999 graduate of Brockport High School, was named leader of the Edison Engineering Development Program at General Electric Corporation in Lynn, Massachusetts. In this role, O'Laughlin will be providing leadership and support for the GE Transportation - Aircraft Engines Edison Engineering Program. She is GEAE's lead recruiter for Clarkson University and recruits for the Society of Women Engineers.

O'Laughlin graduated from Clarkson University with bachelor's degrees in mechanical engineering, and interdisciplinary engineering and management. This year, she will be completing her master's degree in engineering management at Tufts university. O'Laughlin is the daughter of Dr. Michael C. and Mrs. Linda O'Laughlin of Sweden Hill Road in Brockport.


Jenna Bower of Holley was named to the dean's list for the fall 2004 semester at SUNY Brockport.


The following students were recently named to the dean's list at Paul Smith's College for the fall 2004 semester: Christine Cosman of Brockport, a hotel, resort and tourism management major. Cosman was also named an Adirondack Scholar, having achieved a cumulative average of 3.8 or better. Alan Snyder of Hilton, a surveying technology major.


Jenna Sime of Brockport has been named to the fall semester dean's list at the State University of New York at Fredonia where she is majoring in speech/language pathology. A 2002 graduate of Brockport High School, she is the daughter of David and Kathleen Sime of Brockport.


Emily Caton of Spencerport was named to the dean's list for the fall 2004 semester at The Johns Hopkins University. To be selected for this honor, a student must earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

Caton is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Scott B. Caton and attended E. J. Wilson High School in Spencerport.

The international studies major is expected to graduate in May 2005.


Robert Klafehn was recognized for his service to the Walker Fire Department at the department's annual banquet held March 12. Klafehn has given 40 years of volunteer effort to the fire fighting group.

Walker Fire Chief Charlie Hungerford presented Klafehn with a fire department ring.

Klafehn has served as department secretary 22 years, was a member of the Walker Fire Department Board of Directors, chaplain and as a member of several committees. He is an active member of the Monroe County Volunteer Fire Police and the Walker Fire Police and has served as a past captain of the latter group.


Board of Directors and the Officers of RE/MAX International, Inc., presented the Lifetime Achievement Award to Abramo (Brom) Bianchi at the International Convention held in Orlando, Florida. He has helped over 1,000 families obtain their real estate goals.


Joan Greeno, associate broker at the Chili-Ogden Nothnagle Office, was honored at the Nothnagle Realtors annual award luncheon. She was recognized for: 20 years of dedicated service to her clients and loyalty to the company; membership in the Gold Club for excellence in residential home sales; $8 million producer for January 1-December 31, 2004; and is one of Nothnagle Realtor's Top 25 producers.

Greeno resides in Chili with her husband, Larry, vice-president for Planned Giving at Roberts Wesleyan College. They have four grown children and eight grandchildren.


Army Pvt. Matthew P. Hess has graduated from the Field Artillery Automated Tactical Data Systems Specialist One Unit Station Training (OSUT) at Fort Sill, Lawton, Oklahoma.

He is the son of June Chippendale of Kendall. Hess is a 2001 graduate of Kendall Junior-Senior High School.


Troy Matthew Soeder of the United States Air Force graduated as a Second Lieutenant from Officer Training School at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama April 1. Troy and his wife, Amy C. Soeder, daughter of Audrey and Donald Grolemund of Churchville, plan to relocate to Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina where he will work as a communications officer for the 609th Air Communication Squadron.


Michael A.J. Bruton of Spencerport, son of Terry and Phyllis Bruton, graduated from Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas on March 4. He is stationed at Keesler AFB in Biloxi, Mississippi, completing a 30-week course in meteorology. Bruton is a 2003 graduate of Spencerport High School.


Navy Seaman Stephen T. Quattrini, a 2004 graduate of Byron-Bergen High School, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Illinois.


Army Spec. Michael P. Marino has returned to Mannheim, Germany, after a deployment to Kuwait and Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The soldier is regularly assigned to the 72nd Signal Battalion and has been decorated with the Army Commendation Medal. The medal is awarded to individuals who, while serving in any capacity with the Army, have distinguished themselves by acts of heroism, meritorious achievement or meritorious service.

Marino is a team chief with three years of military service. The specialist is the son of Elisabeth J. Marino of Rochester. His wife, Michelle, is the daughter of Toni Tartaglia of Hilton.


Air Force Reserve Airman 1st Class Andrea L. Case has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

Case is the daughter of Richard and Susan Case of Rochester. In 2004, the airman graduated from Gates Chili High School.
