Orleans Sheriff deputy recognized
Orleans County Sheriff Scott Hess announced that one of his deputies has received an award from the National Boating Association and the United States Power Squadron.
Deputy Jim Halstead, supervisor of the Sheriff's Marine Unit and boating safety certification class instructor, has received the 2004 Best Teaching Aid Award for Boat Smart classes. Halstead created training aids that can be placed on the floor of any building where "Boat Smart" classes are taught. These training aids guide students to various locations throughout the building. As they learn to navigate the building, they learn the meaning of the various aids to navigation. The training aids earned a first place award at the USPS - District 6 competition in Corning last fall. They were also entered in a contest at the USPS Annual Meeting where their merit was again recognized.
The Oak Orchard Power Squadron also received an award for Excellence in Recreational Boating Education from the National Boating Association as well as the 2004 F. Ritter Shumway Educational Achievement Award for the USPS - District 6. District 6 is comprised of 18 power squadrons. According to Dan Schuth, Oak Orchard power squadron commander, all of these awards will be displayed at the Oak Orchard Yacht Club on Archibald Road in the Town of Carlton.
