Mr. Lincoln visits Northwood

Second graders respond with living history questions in "Town Meetings." On April 5 second grade students at Northwood Elementary participated in "Town Meetings" with President Abraham Lincoln (actually actor Fritz Klein). "The students have been learning about President Lincoln and the Civil War to prepare for his visit," said teacher Lynn Lincourt. "This corresponds with our social studies curriculum unit on famous Americans." Among the characters portrayed by the students were Clara Barton, Ulysses S. Grant, Harriet Tubman and Civil War soldiers and their families, according to teacher Melanie Murphy. "Students had been preparing in several ways including writing in their character journals," Murphy said. Students also had a 'Presidential Luncheon' with Mr. Lincoln.
