Spencerport receives money to restore depot
Governor George E. Pataki announced $993,875 in Environmental Protection Fund (EPF) grants for 11 recreation and waterfront revitalization projects in Ontario, Orleans, Genesee, Monroe and Wayne counties.
Included among the grants is $100,000 to the Town of Pembroke to acquire property and create the community's first town park. Additional grants will fund restoration of historic buildings, enhancement of existing parkland, and waterfront development.
Commissioner Bernadette Castro of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation said, "Governor Pataki continues to demonstrate an unprecedented commitment to protecting the many resources and scenic treasures unique to New York state. I applaud the spirit of cooperation between the town and the Pembroke Central School District to work together to jointly serve the public by creating and maintaining a new town park. The Pembroke project has received extraordinary community support of a facility that will provide children and their families the opportunity to enjoy recreational activities and open space in a safe, natural setting for years to come."
The Village of Spencerport received $70,000 to restore, renovate and relocate the Rochester, Lockport and Buffalo Trolley Depot to serve as a visitor center with public restrooms, showers and laundry facilities for canal travelers. The proposed site for the restored depot is a village-owned parcel adjacent to the barge canal on the southside waterfront. This project complements work developed under a previous EPF award.
