Brockport Girl Scouts earn the Silver Award

On May 1, Cadette Girl Scouts Jenn Monks and Morgan Culhane of Brockport Troop 847 were presented the Girl Scout Silver Award in a ceremony hosted by the Girl Scouts of Genesee Valley's Order of the Silver Trefoil. The Silver Award is the highest honor that can be earned by Girl Scouts age 11 to 14. The requirements focus on community activities that teach leadership and improving the lives of others through service. The scouts are required to complete several projects that teach leadership, career exploration and service and finally they are required to develop a Silver Award Project that benefits the community and requires 30 or more hours of work.

For their Silver Award Project, Culhane and Monks worked with Chris Daily, the young adult services librarian of the Brockport-Seymour Library, to organize an Easter "Egg-Stravagana." Children of the community were invited to participate in an Easter Egg Hut, arts and crafts and pictures with the Easter Bunny. Participants were asked to bring a book to be donated to the children of local area migrant workers. The event attracted almost 100 children.

In addition to the award certificate and Silver Award pin, the girls are eligible to apply for a scholarship from the Order of the Silver Trefoil, which is only open to Silver Award recipients.
