Random traffic checks planned
The Orleans County Sheriff's Office, along with other area law enforcement agencies, will be conducting random traffic checkpoints throughout the county from May 23 to June 5 to promote the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee's Buckle-Up New York - Click It or Ticket campaign.
This enforcement effort, and others like it, are conducted throughout the year to promote safe driving habits to motorists who not only reside here, but travel through the county. As a result of the BUNY program, seatbelt usage in New York state has increased to 85 percent compliance, resulting in numerous lives saved and countless serious injuries prevented.
This campaign, along with the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP), has also had a fringe benefit over the years. Working these traffic checkpoints along with Orleans County Probation Officers has resulted in the arrest of several probationers who should not, as a condition of their probation, have been operating a motor vehicle. This joint effort has also resulted in the arrests of several individuals who were driving while intoxicated and/or had outstanding warrants pending against them.
