Welcome Center ribbon cutting marks canal development progress
Village of Brockport officials were joined by state and local officials, dignitaries and volunteers for a ribbon cutting to celebrate the opening of a new canal side Welcome Center.
Senator George Maziarz, Assemblyman Bill Reilich and representatives from Governor Pataki's office and Congressman Tom Reynolds provided remarks at the event on April 30 at the 11 Water Street location of the center.
Both Maziarz and Reilich cited the center as a prime example of local, state and federal governments working together to make a vital economic development project come to fruition.
Mayor Josephine Matela said that, "The nearly $100,000 in grants, member items and the generous gifts of community members who purchased plantings for the landscaping around the center and in the park, demonstrate the wide base of support the project has in the greater Brockport community."
More than 50 individuals, families and groups purchased plants, shrubs and trees that have been planted around the center and throughout the canal side park.
Designed to meet the needs of boaters and other canal users, visitors and the greater Brockport community, the 1,000 square foot facility is fully handicapped accessible and features a dock master's office, meeting room, observation deck, two restrooms with showers and a laundry room.
Construction was funded through the Village of Brockport Canal Waterfront Revitalization Fund, a Main Street Grant, Member Item Grants and Community Grants.
