Ferris Goodridge Post sponsors annual Memorial Day parade
Members of the Ferris Goodridge American Legion Post are getting ready to host their annual Memorial Day Parade. A tradition in the Village of Spencerport for many years, Sergeant at Arms for the American Legion and Parade Coordinator Michael Ammering said the fire department, Boy and Girl Scouts and a pipe band will be in attendance.
Post Historian Bob Bechtold said the parade has been an annual event since 1934. Prior to that, memorial services were held at area churches.
As in the past, the junior high school marching band and the high school concert bands will perform at the park following the parade and Memorial Service ceremony.
"There'll be a rifle salute and "Taps" will be played as part of the ceremony," Ammering said.
The parade will be Monday, May 30 beginning at 9 a.m. Parade line-up begins at 8 a.m. on West Avenue in the Village of Spencerport.
The parade will travel south on Union Street to the Veterans Memorial where there will be a brief ceremony. The parade will then re-form and return to the village.
In the event of rain, the memorial service will be held at the Ferris Goodridge Post located at 691 Trimmer Road near Canal Road.
