Former area teacher authors book on coaching

Jack Alofs, who coached at Spencerport for six years and saw his 1969 team play in the sectionals and the finals, has authored a book on coaching basketball entitled Jack Plus 5: Secrets, Strategies, Experiences and Fundamentals in Coaching Winning Basketball.

Some of the players on the team he coached were: Bob Sekel, Terry Barton, John Trenton, Art Erhardt and Randy McMillan.

While coaching basketball at Herkimer County Community College he compiled a 20 year record of 291-155, a 72 percent winning record. Herkimer came in fourth in the Division I Junior College Tournament under his leadership. His team also won the Junior College Division III National Basketball Championship.

Alofs was inducted into the Greater Utica Sports Hall of Fame. He said his book has been endorsed by Coach Jim Boeheim of Syracuse University and by P.J. Carlesimo of the San Antonio Spurs.
