Rangers win first title
Spencerport swept all four singles and three doubles matches against Webster Thomas to clinch their first Division II boy's varsity tennis title. "This is a great bunch who set a goal to win the division and delivered," commented Head Coach John Gentile. "They have made a great impact on the program and on me."
Amir Aslam won at first singles 7-5, 4-6, 9-7, Greg Markant had a relatively easy time at second singles in a 6-1, 6-2 win, Joe Persia won his third singles match 6-0, 7-5 and fourth singles player Shamir Aslam won 6-1, 6-3.
In doubles matches, top pair Dimitrios Kostarellis ad Chris Wolfe won 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) while second doubles partners Mark Blankfield and Andy Powers won 6-3, 6-0. Brian Morgan and Dan Dixon won the third doubles match via forfeit.
The Rangers defeated West Irondequoit, Greece Athena, Greece Arcadia, Webster Schroeder and Thomas during the season to take home the team championship.
"The players have shown an incredible commitment to building the program and all exhibited great character and sportsmanship," Gentile said. "I am very proud of their efforts and know that they are all greatly deserving of their outstanding accomplishment. They have proven to me that hard work does equal success."
