Get to know your neighbors
during Churchville's 'Walk About'
Five years ago, Scott Cullen realized that not enough people knew what type of businesses were operating on Main Street in Churchville. Cullen, who is a village trustee and the owner of Videos Plus and Air Affair, came up with an idea for a one night 'Walk About" where businesses would remain open a bit later and residents, visitors and shoppers would be greeted with a bit of a treat from the business owners.
"I had a lot of people who would come into the video store and ask, 'how long have you been here?' " Cullen said. "I realized that people really didn't know all that Churchville had to offer so I came up with the idea of the open house walk about."
The Walk About is a way for store owners, both on and off Main Street, to showcase their wares to shoppers.
"We have such a nice downtown area that is really starting to thrive and this is a great way to showcase it," Cullen said. "It's a great way to promote our community identity and give residents a chance to meet their neighbors."
During the early years of the celebration the village timed their ribbon cutting on their new building to coincide with the Walk About and the town hosted their dedication ceremony on their cobblestone building at the same time.
"We've also piggybacked this event with the strawberry social that the Union Congregational Church has run for many years," Cullen said.
Cullen said the village is sponsoring a concert in the gazebo at 8 p.m.
Because he has children, Cullen said he is interested in making Churchville be the kind of place his children either come back to live in or at least say with pride, "I grew up in Churchville."
The Walk About is scheduled for June 9.
