Brockport Central School District orchestra students experienced a program from guest artist violinist Caryn Lin. She presented "Bach 2 Rock!" a program on the relationship of the classical style music to rock. Using a machine called a Jam Man, she records up to 30 seconds of live sound with her six-string electric violin, her voice, percussion instruments and even by clapping her hands. The recordings play back in a continuous loop as she plays a violin melody, creating layers of sounds. Lin held workshops where orchestra students had a chance to create their own continuous streams of music using their voices and instruments. Brockport Orchestra Teacher Cathy Gurnett plans to try some fiddle and jazz music with students next year. |
