Sweden gets grant for trail development
Grant allows town to develop, maintain hike-bike trails
An $82,644 state grant was awarded to the Town of Sweden which allows town officials to develop and maintain hiking and biking trails. The grant is a part of the federal Recreational Trails Program, according to Assemblyman Bill Reilich (R,C,I-Greece) who announced it.
Sweden officials earlier applied for a permit from Monroe County to develop, maintain and use their hiking and biking trails. The grant will allow the town to grade and surface the trails so they are wheelchair-accessible.
"I applaud Governor George Pataki for his continued commitment to preserving open space and making the areas accessible to all New Yorkers," Reilich said. "This grant will allow town officials to preserve the beauty and increase the usefulness of their hiking and biking trails."
The state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation administers the federal matching grant program that provides funding to state and local governments, not-for-profit organizations, corporations and partnerships for the acquisition, development, construction and maintenance of trails and trail-related facilities. Funding for the grants is provided through the Federal Highway Administration's Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century and its Recreation Trails Program.
