Wow! Flat Stanley really Gets Around!
Hilton Village Elementary School first graders in teacher Kari LaDue's classroom have been mailing their little friend, Stanley, all around the globe ... and getting replies from everywhere! Based on the children's book of the same name by Jeff Brown where Stanley is squashed flat by a falling bulletin board, the children cut out their own 'flat Stanleys,' mailed them to relatives and friends along with involved letters asking questions and hoping to get a response about their 'Stanley's' adventure. To their excitement, "Flat Stanley" really got around: he sent back a 'Euro' dollar, rode a manatee in Florida, visited Seattle and had other adventures. "Just reading the letters lighted them up," LaDue said. "They learned the great value of letter writing and then we made a map with our Stanley's." Teachers Suzanne Monagan, Sheri Cervini, Sarah Enes and LaDue (above, at left) participated in the project.
