Sweet corn, cherries available locally
Many farms in the Rochester area are now or will soon be picking early varieties of fresh market sweet corn. Harvest is expected to be in full swing by July 15. Historically, the season runs from July 4 until hard frost in late September or early October. This year's season has been delayed by several days due to cold conditions during the early spring that delayed seed germination, Bob King of Cornell Cooperative Extension said.
Sweet cherries are being harvested and fruit quality has been good to excellent across the region. Tart cherries are also soon to be harvested in some areas around Lake Ontario. Summer red raspberries and early blueberries are being picked on several area farms with black raspberries soon to come.
