Spencerport students help cadet drill team capture National Championship

Three Spencerport students, cadets in the Rochester Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol, helped their Demon Drill Team capture first place at the National Cadet Competition in Washington, D.C. Cadet CMSgt. Yvonne Greco, Cadet MSgt. Josh McCann and Cadet SSgt. Mark Vaughn, veterans on the drill team, were thrilled their hard work and dedication paid off with a National Championship.

The events of the competition took place inside the Smithsonian's new Ester-Hazy Air and Space Museum south of Dulles Airport in Washington, DC on July 6-11. The Demon Drill Team represented the Northeast Region (NER) as they took first place. Eight teams competed.

The competition consisted of seven categories: written exam, quiz bowl, innovative drill, standard drill, volleyball match, mile run and in-ranks inspection.

The Spencerport cadets helped as the team took two first place honors, a second place, three third places and a fifth place in the seven categories. Greco won the Fleet Foot Female award for the fastest female mile run time of 6.04. She won this award at the last two National Cadet Competitions, as well as the last three Northeast Region Competitions.

Greco, daughter of Becky and Chuck Greco, is a third year veteran of the team and a 2005 graduate of Spencerport High School, where she was on the Cross Country, Indoor Track and Outdoor Track Teams. She enlisted in the U.S. Air Force on the delayed enlistment program, and was officially inducted into the Air Force during the 2005 ESL Rochester International Air Show, with the USAF Thunderbirds in attendance. McCann, son of Veronica Falkevitz, is a two year veteran of the team and a student at Spencerport High School, where he participates in the French Club and Magic the Gathering Club. He is also involved in the Young American Bowling Alliance. McCann is serving his second year as First Sergeant for the Rochester Composite Squadron. Vaughn, son of Kathy S. Vaughn, is also a two year veteran of the Drill Team and a student at Spencerport High School, where he participates in cross country and basketball.
