Devils hand Saints first loss

Senior Nate Kalpin scored in the 33rd minute to lead Brockport to a 1-0 victory over Churchville-Chili in varsity boy's soccer.

Following a 15-minute delay due to a missing official, the Blue Devils had the better of the early chances. Tom Nash and Seth Robishaw both had scoring opportunities in the 10th minute followed by Shawn Roberts having his shot blocked in the 13th minute. Justin Worboys put a header off the crossbar in the 24th minute for Brockport before the Saints had their first scoring opportunity on a shot by Jordan Andrecolich resulting in a diving stop by Brockport goalkeeper Connor Mykin.

Following several more minutes of sustained pressure from the Saints, Kalpin put his shot in the lower right corner of the net from 20 yards out after taking a feed from Tobias Rosenthal.

The Saints finished the first half strong with two scoring chances by Kevin Massere, one by Nick Demarco and, in the final minute of the half, when Mike Malone fed Brennan Dooling, whose shot was tipped over the crossbar by Mykins in goal.

The second half featured minimal scoring chances with Brockport's Matt Newsome, Roberts and Kalpin having opportunities. The Saints' best chance to even the score came with two minutes remaining when Rob Tanner fed Joe Soto who shot wide. Saints goalkeeper Jimmy Frascati made 14 saves in net.

"A lot of teams didn't expect anything from this team this year, but we have come to play," said Brockport head coach Chris Zorn. "We have played four games in six days and come out 3-1 against top teams like Gates Chili, Penfield and now Churchville. This team has heart. After last season, we've worked on keeping our one-goal leads and I think we took the game to C-C in the second half."
