Eagles win on Maxon goal
Alternate goalkeeper Mike Maxon scored late in the first half to lead Kendall to a 1-0 boy's soccer victory over Holley at Jurh's Field.
Maxon rotates with Corey Manners in goal for the Eagles and it was Manners' turn. Maxon played in the field and converted a long pass from Ryan Reis that had dribbled past the Holley keeper for the only tally of the game.
Both teams traded scoring chances in the first thirty minutes as Maxon put a shot over the crossbar in the 13th minute and teammate Bryan Hardenbrook later put a long, bending shot on goal. In the 34th minute, Holley's Brandon McMillion put his corner kick into the box, but Mike Penna's header was grabbed by Manners for the save.
The Hawks put pressure on again late in the first half when Jason Lutes had a chance and, in the second half, Andrew Vendetti had a chip shot stopped in the 60th minute. Just four minutes later, the Hawks had probably their best opportunity with a pair of direct kicks from in close, but failed to convert. Their final chance came with three minutes remaining when Penna just missed connecting on a pass in the box.
Manners, whose brother Justin was an All-League goalkeeper last season, is picking up right where he left off with his second shutout of the year.
"We were winning the majority of the 50-50 balls and used our size advantage," said head coach John Allman. "I thought the key to the game was Mike Moore and Tim Steadman taking control of the midfield, especially in the second half."
The Eagles improved to 4-4-1 and picked up their first league win while Holley fell to 5-4. The Hawks were on a 5-1 streak since dropping their opening two games of the season for the first time since 1987.
