Fire essay contest underway
Monroe County's Volunteer Firemen's Association has distributed their 2005 Fire Prevention Essay Contest rules to all schools in Monroe County (excluding the City of Rochester). Two divisions for judging have been established: for grades 5 and 6, a 200 word essay and for grades 7 and 8, a 300 word essay.
Classroom teachers are encouraged to undertake the subject "Use Candles With Care" for this year's theme. Essays (not lists of rules or ideas) may be submitted at the schools students attend, public, parochial or private. In addition, entries from single students or home-schooled pupils can be sent directly to Gerald Hendrickson, 480 Stottle Road, Scottsville 14546.
According to organizers, it is important for those entering to follow the exact rules in order to be eligible for local and regional prizes, cash or plaques. These will be awarded in December. Deadline for entering the contest is October 24, when firemen will go to the schools and collect entries for judging.
Call Hendrickson, 889-9570, if entering individually.
