Hawks win on Hendel goal
Senior Megan Hendel scored in the 52nd minute of the game to give Holley a 1-0 win at Byron-Bergen in girl's soccer.
After a scoreless first half, Hendel took a pass from Ashley Colby and found the upper right corner of the net to give the Hawks the only offense they would need.
The Bees had a chance in the first two minutes of the game when Samantha Peters fed Jessica Smith on a break, but Smith's shot was deflected wide of the net by Holley goalkeeper Erika Ayers.
The Hawks dominated the rest of the scoring chances in the first half. Colby shot wide in the third minute, Courtney Gaylord had her shot from 30 yards out stopped in the seventh minute and Corrie Ingraham put a shot on net off a corner kick scramble in the 16th minute. Colby, Stacy Swabb and Gaylord also had scoring chances in the last thirteen minutes of the first half.
The Bees were kept bottled up through most of the second half by the Hawks backfield of Lora Bower, Ingraham, Dominique Rupert and Jayme Bopp. In the 60th minute, Jeannette Menzie had her shot from the right corner stopped and, six minutes later, co-captain Amanda Krol shot over the crossbar.
Ayers registered her sixth shutout of the season in helping Holley move their record to 7-5 in league play while Byron-Bergen fell to 6-5-1.
