Blue Devils continue storybook season
Brockport has never won a Section Five boy's soccer championship, but they moved one step closer with a 2-1 victory over Churchville-Chili in the semi-finals to advance to play top-seeded Fairport in the Class AAA finals.
Just 92 seconds into the game, Seth Robishaw fed Shawn Robers for a goal to put the Blue Devils up 1-0. The Saints rebounded just six minutes later to tie the game at 1-1 when Mike Malone forced a turnover and scored.
The game-winning goal came in the 16th minute when Brockport's Dan Cavanaugh took a corner kick that was headed in by Jack Flechaus.
The Saints' Malone put a shot over the crossbar in the 27th minute and, in the second half, C-C had two of their best scoring chances. In the 48th minute Kevin Massere fed Adam Borgus, whose point-blank shot was stopped by Brockport goalkeeper Connor Mykins. Massere's rebound effort was knocked wide. Just six minutes later, Scott Zorn put a shot over the crossbar and the Blue Devils defense limited the scoring opportunities for the remainder of the game.
"We marked up a little tighter and played with more heart and intensity in the second half," said defender Craig Dimbleby. "This season has been pretty big and we're pretty proud of ourselves."
"Finally it has all come together," said head coach Chris Zorn, whose team was ranked 16th among Class AAA in New York state as of October 26. "I see the smiles on the players' faces and see that this is a great thing for Brockport. Our defense was giving up a few too many opportunities early, but our goalkeeper came up big when he had to."
