Janell Wood (center), a sophomore at Byron-Bergen High School, was honored at the 2005 National Philanthropy Day luncheon. She was one of three nominees in the category of Outstanding Youth Volunteer Fundraiser and the only individual to receive this honor. She was nominated by the Arthritis Foundation for her role in organizing the first-ever Genesee County Arthritis Walk last May. The event, held in Batavia, raised $3,000. Wood, who was diagnosed with arthritis when she was 18 months old, solicited business sponsors, secured donations of food for event walkers and appeared on WBTA Radio to encourage others to participate.
