Mask making techniques
Holley fifth grader Sonia Mendoza prints a Paris craft mask of her own face in art class. To create the masks, the students lay on a tabletop for about 15 minutes, face covered in plastic wrap, with only their mouth uncovered. They breath through two straws, while their faces are covered with wet plaster strips. The mask takes about 15 minutes to harden. Once the masks are dry, students add decorations and paint them in vibrant colors. Teacher Mini Reyngoudt talks about why cultures use masks (celebrations, rituals, ceremonies, etc.) and how they are frozen expressions in time.
