Garland Cemetery topic of slide show

On Thursday, January 19, Barbara Hefke will present a slide show on Highlights of the Garland Cemetery at Morgan Manning Hose, 151 Main Street, Brockport. The program, sponsored by the Western Monroe Historical Society, starts at 7 p.m. It is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

Incorporated in 1868, the 22-acre cemetery is located at 7743 Ridge Road West in Clarkson. Hefke will comment on the different styles of graphics and symbolism on various grave stones dating from the early 1800s to the present. Also of interest are the monuments in the older section, bearing names of families from the early history of the area, such as Wadhams, Prosser, Minot, Moore, Hoy and others.

Hefke, for nine years, has been secretary of the Garland Cemetery Association board of trustees. She is the third generation of the Northrup family to serve on the board, succeeding her father and grandfather, whose graves are in the Northrup family plot of the cemetery.
