Rangers advance in "Chow" Tourney
Andrea Kazmierski sunk five three-pointers and Kacey Pratt scored six of her 17 points in the final quarter to lead Spencerport to a 50-30 win over Brockport in the first round of the 15th annual "Coach Chow" Girls' Basketball Classic held at Spencerport High School.
All proceeds from the tournament are donated to the American Cancer Society in Donald "Coach Chow" Wierzchowski's name. The 32-year teacher and coach died of pancreatic cancer in 2002.
The Rangers built a 15-point lead in the second quarter before Brockport broke a five-minute scoreless drought with three consecutive baskets from Emma VanDenburg, Kelley VanDenburg and Lindsay Hage near the end of the first half.
The Blue Devils cut the lead to six points on an Andrea Leasure field goal early in the third quarter, but that was as close as they would get.
Allison Dietrick ended the third quarter and began the fourth quarter with baskets as the Rangers outscored Brockport 14-5 over the final stanza.
Kelley VanDenburg, headed to the University of Alabama on a golf scholarship next fall, led the Blue Devils in scoring with 10 points. Emma VanDenburg scored eight points while Leasure led with eight rebounds and Hage handed out five assists.
Kazmierski finished with 17 points to tie for game-high honors with Pratt, who also hauled down eight rebounds. Dietrick added eight rebounds as the Rangers improved to 4-0 on the season. They were to battle defending champion Churchville-Chili in the finals in trying to win the title for the first time since 1998 and third time overall. The Rangers lost to the Saints in the final in the 2004 tourney.
