Red Cross/RG&E heating fund available
For those on a strict budget, paying higher heating bills can be a challenge, but there is help through the Red Cross/RG&E Heating Fund.
Operating in Monroe and the surrounding counties, the program works to warm "hearts and hearths." The program is administered by the Red Cross in all of the surrounding counties except Allegany, where it is run by ACCORD. The heating fund is designed for individuals and families who: have a one-time bill payment emergency; meet established income guidelines; have a shut-off notice; and don't qualify for any government assistance.
Recipients do not have to be customers of RG&E to qualify for a grant. It does not matter what type of fuel the recipient needs - oil, propane or wood; however, there must be a heating emergency, such as a lack of those fuels or a potential discontinuation of gas or electric service.
To qualify, participants cannot be eligible for assistance for HEAP (Home Energy Assistance Program) or from the county Department of Social Services. Grants are applied to a customer's heating bill. The Red Cross/RG&E Heating Fund is made possible through RG&E shareholders and customer donations.
