Extension of Megan's Law provisions called for
Current provisions under the existing Megan's Law means 3,579 sex offenders will be dropped from the sex offender registry by year's end.
Assemblyman Bill Reilich (134th District) and others called on fellow assembly members to join in extending registration requirements under the state's Megan's Law, a top priority for the 2006 legislative session.
"As a legislator and as a parent, I feel it is very important to keep our families safe," said Reilich. "Extending the Megan's Law registration requirement makes sense because it's the right thing to do."
The state Sex Offender Registry, a provision under Megan's Law, began in January 1996. Part of the law allows Level 1 and 2 convicted sex offenders to stop registering for the registry after 10 years. If the issue is not addressed by the end of 2006, information about more than 3,500 sex offenders will be dropped from the registry.
