Rangers second at 40th Teike Bernabi
Spencerport's Nick Terenzi and Chris Collura took home titles, but the Rangers finished second to Shenendahowa in the 40th Annual Teike/Bernabi Wrestling Tournament held at Spencerport High School.
With four of the top 10 ranked teams in the state (Wayne - 2nd, Johnson City - 4th, Shenendahowa - 6th, Spencerport - 9th) participating, the Rangers sent five wrestlers to the finals of their respective weight classes.
At 112 pounds, Nick Terenzi defeated Mike Rosselli from Wayne Central 6-2 after winning by pin in the quarterfinals and by 7-4 decision in the semis.
Collura took the 130 pound match by defeating Johnson City's Mike Tesar 3-2 in the final. He had won his quarterfinal match by major decision 17-5 and his quarterfinal by pin in 3:33.
Matt Piedimonte advanced to the final in the 103 pound class before losing after winning both his first two matches by 5-4 scores. At 145 pounds, Chris Vigliotti lost by a point 7-6 in the final. He advanced by pin in the quarterfinals and with an 8-1 decision in the semi's. Bryan Bourne, trying to defend his 2004 tourney title, lost his final match on a last second takedown 4-2 at 152 pounds. He had advanced by winning his quarterfinal by pin and semifinal 8-0.
This is the second consecutive year the Rangers have finished second in the tournament. They have won the title 13 times including five in a row from 1999-2003.
The tournament is named for Walter Teike and Leo Bernabi. Teike was athletic director and wrestling coach at Spencerport from 1966-67 through 1978-79 with a 161-26-2 record. Bernabi was superintendent of schools and the founder of Spencerport wrestling as the first head coach in 1949-50 and compiled a 41-11-1 record over six seasons.
