Relay for Life information meeting set

The American Cancer Society's Special Event Director Cindy Vranich was the guest speaker at the January meeting of the Brockport Breast Cancer Support Group. Plans for the seventh annual Westside Relay for Life were presented.

Relay is an overnight celebration of cancer survivorship. For the newly diagnosed, Relay offers a chance to meet others who have the same type of cancer. For caregivers who give time, love and support to those who face cancer, Relay provides hope and understanding. The event begins with cancer survivors walking a victory lap around the track. After nightfall, hundreds of luminaria candles, dedicated to loved ones, line the track and are left burning throughout the night to remind participants of the importance of their contributions. It's a time to remember those who have lost their battle with cancer.

One in three people will be diagnosed with cancer within their lifetime and every dollar raised at Relay saves lives by funding cancer research, early detection and prevention, advocacy efforts and patient services and programs. The American Cancer Society funds more than $130 million of cancer research a year. Today, nearly $38 million in ACS research grants are at work in New York and New Jersey.

The Brockport Breast Cancer Support Group will sponsor an informational meeting for Relay For Life 2006, on Thursday, January 26, from 7 to 7:45 p.m. at Brockport Village Hall Offices, 49 State Street. For information call Anne Klein, 637-0220 or Cindy Vranich, 288-1951 ext. 122.
