Vietnam hero honored

Major George Quamo, U.S. Army Special Forces, Mac V Sog was honored in Rensselaer County at a ceremony honoring deceased veterans on January 9. Major Quamo, a highly decorated soldier, is the brother of Spencerport resident James Quamo, and his wife, Pamela. He is also brother to Murietta Quamo Bauer of the Spencerport area and Niki Quamo Steitz of Venice, Florida, the late Tefta Quamo Moses of Chappaqua, the late Ylika Quamo Runkle of La Canada, California. He was also the son of the late Alexander Quamo who passed away in 1952 in Lynn, Massachusetts and son of the late Kaliroi Quamo, formerly of the Spencerport area.

Major Quamo was the youngest Major in Mac V Sog at the age of 27. He earned the Distinguished Service Cross, the second highest award, as well as two Silver Stars, the Bronze Star, Legion of Merit and Presidential Unit citations and recognitions.
