Eyeglass recycling an important part of community service club's efforts
For 80 years, Lions Clubs have collected, cleaned, prepared, repaired, classified by prescription, and distributed used eyewear. Used eyeglass collections are the number one activity of Lions Clubs in the U.S. and the Brockport Lions Club is no exception. In 2003-2004, Lions collected nine million pairs of used eyeglasses - of that total the Brockport community contributed 3,500 pair.
In the U.S., there are seven Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centers (California/Nevada, Indiana, New Jersey, Texas, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin). Currently it costs less than eight cents ($.08) to provide someone in a developing nation with recycled quality eyeglasses. All types of eyeglasses and sunglasses, prescription and non-prescription, are acceptable.
The Brockport Lions have several collection centers within the community where old eyeglasses can be deposited. The Lions Club collection receptacles can be found at the following locations: Empire Vision, Sweden/Clarkson Community Center, Our Village Optician, Sweden Senior Center, Klafehn & Heise Law Office, offices of Doctors Smith and Raff (on Main Street), First Niagara Bank, Towpath Optician, The Landing, Lakeside Hospital and Oak Orchard Community Health Center.
