Area wrestlers off to states

Eight area wrestlers, including four from Brockport, won their respective weight classes at the Super Sectionals held at Fairport last weekend and have advanced to compete in the New York State Championships February 24-25 at Nassau Coliseum on Long Island.

Trevor Irwin (96 lbs.), John-Martin Cannon (135 lbs.), Erik Schuth (160 lbs.) and Alex Hwaehujor (215 lbs.) took top honors for the Blue Devils. Mark Ranzenbach (125 lbs.) from Hilton, Bryan Bourne (152 lbs.) from Spencerport, Mike Castro (275 lbs.) of Churchville-Chili and Mike McInally (119 lbs. Division II) from Byron-Bergen will all compete to win state titles.

In the Division I finals, Irwin advanced with a 10-6 decision, Cannon won 11-4, Schuth 3-1 in overtime and Hwaehujor 2-1 with an escape in overtime. Ranzenbach won his final 1-0, Bourne 5-1, Castro 2-1 and McInally via major decision 10-1.

Final New York state team rankings were released on February 19 with Spencerport ranked 5th and Brockport 8th in Division I (large schools) and Holley 7th in Division II (small schools).
