Sock collection yields over 300 pair
Homeschooler Samantha Stewart exceeded her goal of collecting 300 pairs of tube socks and collected close to 320 pairs for her community service project, Operation: Socks from Sam. Stewart is a 10th grader who, as part of her schooling curriculum, has to participate in a community service.
"We had some people who gave us a lot socks and I had a lady who gave me a check for $50 so I could go out and buy socks for the collection," she said.
Stewart had set herself a goal of collecting the 300 pairs by March 1 and on February 27 she had exceeded the goal. The socks were going to be delivered to the Open Door Mission on March 3 for distribution to the homeless.
Why tube socks? She said she figured they would be the best fit for most people who might receive them.
"I just want to thank everyone who donated to the project and to the homeless people," she said.
