Dennstedt gets Eagles win
Churchville-Chili grad Jake Dennstedt picked up the victory in relief as SUNY Brockport returned from the southern portion of their schedule with a 5-1 win over the University of Rochester at the Clark Whited baseball/softball complex. The win marked the team's third in a row.
Dennstedt came on to pitch with one out in the sixth inning when the Yellow Jackets pushed across their only run of the game before the Golden Eagles came back with five runs in the bottom of the sixth.
In the home sixth, senior Jim Debay stroked a one-out single to center and Tim Wilson reached on a fielder's choice with Debay advancing to third on an error before scoring on Anthony Shallo's RBI single to right. Catcher Jeff Schwegler increased his hitting streak to six games with an infield single to load the bases before Sean Davis singled to right to score the second run.
First baseman Mike Sparks then hit the big blow - a double to right scoring Shallo and Schwegler with Davis later crossing the plate on a wild pitch to end the scoring.
Redshirt junior Jeff Miterko was the starting pitcher and allowed just one hit with three strikeouts over four innings of work. Dennstedt relieved Casey Scott and allowed one hit over 2.2 innings before giving way in the ninth for Tim Mascari who struck out two of the three batters he faced.
Debay had two hits in the contest and Davis improved to 10-for-10 in stolen bases with two to go with two hits.
"It seems like we didn't play a full game - we got a big lead early and the gave up a big inning," said 10th year head coach Mark Rowland about the team's 3-6 trip to Arizona over spring break where the team allowed an average of almost eight runs per game. "We would get off to a good start and then we would let teams roll over us. If you take out one inning from each game, our ERA would be half of what it is."
After winning the first two games of the 2006 season, the Golden Eagles went on a 1-6 tailspin. The U of R win evened their season record a 6-6 as they head into the key conference portion of the schedule. Brockport has seven home games remaining on the schedule - six of them doubleheaders.
