On March 15 President of the Orleans County Fire Police Association Jack Curtis Sr. and Vice President David Traxler awarded Secretary/Treasurer Howard Mills the annual Fire Police of the Year Award for 2005.

Lorne Day wrote the recommendation letter asking that Mills be selected to receive the honor.

Mills had fallen and broken his leg and was just on the mend when a fellow fire police had a major stroke. Mills came to visit while still in his wheel chair. After the stricken fire policeman returned home from his hospital stay, Mills, still in a wheel chair continued to make visits.

A few months later, the Orleans County Fire Police Association's president suffered a stroke and the then vice president became ill. Along with responding to his fire department's duties, Mills took over all the responsibilities of the association's executive board keeping it on track. He went out of his way to take people to appointments and outings to keep their spirits high, the recommendation letter said.

The Orleans County Fire Police Association meets at 7:30 p.m. on the third Wednesday of every other month.
