Safety efforts earn Brockport CSD award

The Brockport Central School District received the highest, titanium level, "2006 School Safety Excellence Award" from the Utica National Insurance Group. Utica National officials presented Brockport officials with a custom-framed certificate and a $500 award for use in furthering safety efforts at its 26th annual school safety seminar.

Brockport will continue its efforts to improve safety and security beginning with a district-wide independent audit of the school risk and threat practices. "We are very hopeful that we will be a recipient of a federal grant to address our equipment and training needs," said Dr. James Wood, assistant superintendent for business.

Brockport has had a safety committee since 1991, which meets monthly. The committee holds "table top drills" where members review made up scenarios to test emergency procedures and examines how the district carries out safety and security and ensures that regulations comply with state law and board policy. The committee includes representatives from every school building, operations and maintenance, security, transportation, athletics, transportation, food service, school nurse staff, and PTSA; and works closely with law enforcement officials.
