Science program funding secured by state senator
The efforts of state Senator George D. Maziarz (R-62nd district), to secure state funding for "hands-on" science demonstrations in the Spencerport district were recently recognized by district superintendent Mary Anne Kermis.
Kermis presented the Senator with a certificate of appreciation and a district lapel pin memento.
The funding followed a request from the district and provided for several "Mad Science" demonstrations in Spencerport Elementary Schools.
Students from Charles Conway's class at Terry A. Taylor Elementary added their own "thank you" and welcomed the Senator to their "Mad Science" demonstration on Friday, April 7.
Students displayed a wall-sized banner for Senator Maziarz and presented him with a handmade thank you card.
Both Kermis, a former science teacher, and Senator Maziarz spoke of the importance of a good science education. The Senator took questions from students, explained how to create laws, how long he works every day, and if he gets enough time with his family.
"Mad Science" offers inquiry-based workshops that meet curriculum requirements. Structured as an in-class field trip, a "Mad Science" workshop offers students a "hands-on" science experience without leaving school. "Mad Science" workshops can offer preschool to sixth grade children engaging learning experiences. The company offers many workshop topics.
