Peter Tonery

Local man's play to be performed at GeVa

Peter Tonery, of Hamlin, may not consider himself a playwright but his play was one of those chosen by GeVa Theatre to be performed as part of its "young and emerging playwrights" series.

By day, Tonery is a writer, director and producer of video communications for business and education. He also writes scripts and develops creative collateral for corporate clients. But by night, he puts on his playwriting hat and has turned out a play titled "Undone." It will be performed on Monday, May 8 in the Nextstage at GeVa Theatre Center.

"I really wouldn't call myself a playwright," he said. "I think one must be published for that. A writer needs to sell and have a play produced on stage to qualify. I am an aspiring playwright."

This will be the second time one of his plays has been chosen during the festival. The first was in 1992 or 1993, he said.

His play, the idea for which came to him from a "mix of things," is based on current events. "Politics, the war and frequent stories concerning the difficulty in recruiting new soldiers all figured into the writing of it," he said. "The play is about the nature of the warrior and how modern culture has twisted our perception and regulation of him."

Tickets for the Regional Playwrights Festival are $7 and can be purchased by calling 232-4382.
