New benches added to Greenway trail

Hikers and bikers using the Genesee Valley Greenway are becoming more numerous as temperatures rise and the countryside becomes green. In addition to the spring flowers and more visible wildlife, users are finding more rest spots along the path. New and refurbished benches are being placed along the trail.

Ned Holmes, president of the board of directors of Friends of the Genesee Valley Greenway, said twenty-five bench kits were purchased and a contractor was hired to clear and level the sites. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is providing labor to pour concrete bases and install the benches. Projects along the Greenway that have been completed by volunteers are: Anthony Rounding, Geneseo Boy Scout Troop 70, refurbished four benches, between Route 20 and York Landing; John Clark, Nunda Boy Scout Troop 77, refurbished two benches. Clark also identified and labeled tree species in the vicinity of the benches; Jamie Pike, Caledonia Boy Scout Troop 27, fabricated mile markers. Pike has installed the markers between miles 11 and 20 (Route 251 and Fowlerville); Ten additional mile markers were constructed and installed between miles 21 and 30 by members of the Geneseo Kiwanis; and John Paul Humphrey, Brighton Boy Scout Troop 77, refurbished two benches in Monroe County. They are located in North Chili.
