Area athletes recognized for achievement in sports
Judy Wright of Roberts Wesleyan College and Churchville native Lyndsay Wall were major awards winner at the 28th Annual WHAM Sportswomen of the Year Awards Luncheon on April 24.
Presenting the Newsradio 1180 WHAM Awards was the luncheon's featured speaker, 1992 LPGA Tour Player of the Year and 1996 Rochester champion Dottie Pepper.
Wright, a senior four-year starting guard on Roberts Wesleyan's basketball team, was the recipient of the WHAM College Sportswoman of the Year Award.
In 2005-06, Wright set New York state collegiate records for all divisions for most points in one season (1,105) and career (2,813) while pacing her Raiders (23-11) to a fifth place finish at the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Tournament, compiling 32.5 ppg, 8.3 rebs. pg, 4.7 asts. pg, 3.2 stls. pg, 43.5 FG%, 32.0 3-pt. FG%, and 70.5 FS% figures, with First Team NAIA and NCCAA All-American honors.
The WHAM At-Large (non-high school or college participant) Sportswoman of the Year Award was shared by Kim Insalaco of Greece and Wall, who were members of the U.S. Olympic Ice Hockey Team that beat Finland 4-0 for the Bronze Medal at the 2006 Winter Olympics.
The 25-year-old Insalaco was a fourth-line forward and penalty killer, while the 20-year-old Wall played a regular shift on defense and accumulated two assists in Olympic play. Wall won the WHAM At-Large Award in 2001-02 as a member of the U.S. Olympic Team that earned the 2002 Olympic Silver Medal.
Junior Alyssa D'Errico of Byron-Bergen (volleyball, basketball and softball), senior Amanda Griggs of Hilton (cross-country, indoor and outdoor track), and senior Kelley VanDenburg of Brockport (golf and basketball) were three of the five high school finalists, while Spencerport golfer Maggie Kril was an At-Large finalist.
