Volunteers make clean-up sweep

The Town of Sweden Adopt-A-Trail program began its sixth season with a kickoff "sweep" of the Erie Canal towpath on Saturday, May 5. Eight groups of volunteers are again participating in the effort, which involves monthly policing of the towpath for litter and light maintenance and reporting more serious problems to the Canal Corporation.

Among the volunteer groups is the Garden Club of Brockport, which recently received the first Outstanding Adopt-A-Trail Group award from the Canal Corporation. The organization was selected from among eleven nominees statewide for the consistency of its efforts and for undertaking to beautify as well as maintain the towpath. It was recognized, especially, for its work caring for rose bushes on the stretch between the Park Avenue and Main Street bridges. For this season, the Garden Club is also going to plant and care for flower beds at the canalside Welcome Center.

Participating locally for the sixth straight year are the Brockport High School Girls' Swim Team, the First Presbyterian Church, the Garden Club of Brockport, the Brockport History Club, the Middle School Retirees, the Walks and Talks, the Brockport Federal Credit Union, and the Coffee Cup Campers.
