Area youth win honors
More than 20 participants competed in the Pitch, Hit & Run competition hosted by Hamlin Recreation on May 6 at the Hamlin Town Hall grounds.
These participants won first place honors in their respective age groups:
Age 7/8 overall - Nicholas Manners - Kendall - 394; Pitch Champion - Nicholas Manners - Kendall - 150; Hit Champion - Nicholas Manners - Kendall - 194; Run Champion - Dillon Philmon - Hamlin - 122.
Age 9/10 overall - Joshua Wilson - Hamlin - 520; Pitch Champion - Joshua Wilson - Hamlin - 225; Hit Champion - Joshua Wilson - Hamlin - 176; Run Champion - Joshua Wilson - Hamlin - 119.
Age 11/12 overall - Donald Mitchell - Hamlin - 634; Pitch Champion - Donald Mitchell - Hamlin - 300; Hit Champion - Zackery Rowell - Hamlin - 224; Run Champion - Zackery Rowell - Hamlin - 171.
Age 13/14 overall - Kyle Bobzin - Kendall - 513; Pitch Champion - Kyle Bobzin - Kendall - 225; Hit Champion - Kyle Bobzin - Kendall - 170; Run Champion - Tyler Hardenbrook - Hamlin - 143.
The winners will compete in the sectional competition to be held in Victor.
Youth are local U.S. Junior Olympic Skills winners
Local youngsters between the ages of 8 and 13 participated in the U.S. Junior Olympic Skills Competition presented by Kellogg's Frosted Flakes (Jr. Olympic Skills). This free grassroots youth participation program allows boys and girls, competing separately, the opportunity to showcase their athletic abilities in four (4) athletic events - basketball, soccer, tennis and track & field. The program is designed to encourage youth participation in sports while promoting sportsmanship.
The track and field, basketball and soccer portions of the Jr. Olympic Skills were hosted by Hamlin Recreation on May 13. The winner in track & field, soccer and basketball for 12-13-year-old boys was Gage Groenendaal of Hamlin. The winner in track and field for 10-11-year-old girls was Carly Byron of Hamlin. These winners will advance to the Regional Competition to be held at Sweden/Clarkson Community Center.
