Blue Devils drop title game
Fairport scored runs in each of the first three innings, including batting around and scoring four runs in the second, to defeat Brockport 6-1 in the Class AAA baseball championship game played at Dwyer Stadium in Batavia. It was Brockport's third trip to the finals over the last four seasons.
After a first inning two-out home run from catcher Andy Gardner, the Red Raiders got the first two runners on in the second. Both scored and Fairport added two more unearned runs in the inning, knocking out Brockport starting pitcher Joe Jenkins.
Nate Parrino came on in relief and allowed Fairport's sixth run in the third inning before setting down the side in order in the fourth.
The Blue Devils got the offense rolling in the fourth inning when Parrino and first baseman Bob Frisch singled followed by Nick D'Ambrosio's bunt single to load the bases. After a strikeout, Kane Share had a fielder's choice to drive in a run. After a walk to Evan Wexler to again load the bases, Alex Maxon hit a scorcher right at second baseman Corey Goeggelman who made a leaping catch to end the threat.
Fairport didn't have a hit after the third inning, but the damage was already done.
"They were the better team today with the big hits and hitting more consistently than we did," said Brockport head coach Brian Jones of his young team. "Their kid pitched a great game, but we weren't nervous because we didn't know any better. Once they got ahead early they felt a little of the pressure, but we're young enough that we'll be back; that's what's great about it."
Brandon DeRosa went all the way on the mound for the Red Raiders allowing just four hits with four walks and nine strikeouts, including the last five batters of the game.
